CEREC restorations take about an hour at Dr. Salami’s Dental Group. Rancho Bernardo crowns, inlays and onlays need no gooey impressions or long wait times.
Pegah Salami DMD, provides customized restorations such as porcelain crowns, inlays and onlays (partial crowns) in just about an hour. How does she do it? It’s all thanks to her CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic) machine. Read all about its many benefits.
When a tooth needs a full or partial crown
Have you cracked the corner off a tooth which has a large filling? Do you have a substantial amount of decay on a molar? Did you sustain an oral injury that fractured a front tooth? Have you had root canal therapy on an abscessed tooth? Has that canine always been oddly shaped or discolored?
All these conditions necessitate a dental crown from your Rancho Bernardo dentist. Dr. Pegah Salami has many years of experience in restorative dentistry–plenty enough to know when a tooth will fail unless:
it is strengthened and covered by a ceramic cap, or dental crown
it receives an inlay, a partial crown that replaces a large filling within the cusps of a tooth, or an onlay, a partial crown that replaces a large filling including one or more cusps of a tooth
The traditional method of restoration
With traditional restorative methods, dental crowns came in 4 basic materials:
- Gold, the most durable
- Gold, the most durable
- Metal alloy or stainless steel
- Porcelain fused to metal (PFM)
- All-porcelain
After confirming the need for a dental cap with oral examination and x-rays, the Rancho Bernardo dentist took oral impressions using a putty-like material in a metal tray that fit over the top or bottom arch of teeth. Then, the impression, x-rays and treatment instructions were sent to a dental lab for fabrication of the restoration.
During the one to 2 week wait, the patient wore a temporary filling or crown. Finally, the dentist cemented the new cap in place, adjusting its fit and bite with the opposing arch.
The advantages of CEREC crowns
Simply put, CEREC machines make Rancho Bernardo restorative dentistry easier, faster and more lifelike. The machine actually takes a digital impression of the individual’s mouth. There is no impression putty or tray. Then, under the dentist’s direction, it takes the images and designs a perfect looking and fitting crown.
Next, the machine mills the Rancho Bernardo CEREC crown from a beautiful block of solid ceramic. The milling takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Dr. Salami does some final shaping and coloring on the new crown. A great benefit of CEREC methods is perfect fit. These crowns, inlays or onlays generally fit over the prepared tooth exactly with the very first try.
All in all, the entire process, from diagnosis to enamel preparation to impressions, design and milling, takes about an hour. The patient can even watch the CEREC machine manufacture his or her porcelain crown.
